How To Guarantee Success When Choosing Crochet Patterns

By Angela Reynolds

If you have always loved the idea of homemade items such as sweaters, hats, socks and blankets you may want to think about trying your hand at crocheting. Many people find that completing crochet patterns is much easier to do since only a single hook is needed. This can make it an easier skill to pick up than knitting, which uses two needles and which can be more difficult to figure out. If you are looking for patterns that you can make, here are some tips that can help increase your chance of success.

If you think that craft shops and yarn stores are the only place to find patterns, you may be limiting your selection. While there are still choices available in stores there are also options available online. Some yarn companies will offer free patterns that are designed to highlight new types of fiber that they have created or new colors that they are producing.

There are many different places where you can find patterns. Online communities and websites will have many different options to choose from. You may be able to find free patterns that you can look at or download. Since patterns can be pricey if you purchase them from a store you may want to look for free ones, especially when you are just starting out.

Price alone should not be the main factor in which pattern you choose. Each option should have a skill or difficulty rating listed right on the pattern itself. If you look at a beginner pattern you may find that there are simple stitches used to create a pattern. You may also want to make sure that you choose a version that has diagrams that show you how to complete each of the stitches.

If a particular pattern is online you may want to read reviews that users have left. There may be information about problem areas in a pattern or further explanation about how to complete specific areas. They may also be able to help you avoid specific pattern options that simply will not turn out even if the instructions are followed closely.

While a good set of instructions is important, so is having the right equipment and materials. For example, hooks come in a wide variety of sizes. There are also different yarns and using the wrong one can make it impossible to get the look you are trying to achieve. Sizing charts are also good things to look for especially if you are working on an item that will be worn such as a sweater or hat.

Slowing down may mean that a project will take longer but it can mean that you avoid making mistakes when crocheting. There is nothing more frustrating than having to rip out a lot of your work and redo it just because you have missed a step or forgotten to put in a few stitches.

Crocheting items can be a fun and relaxing hobby. Although it may seem daunting when you are a beginner you should be able to start creating some beautiful items and quickly progress from simple patterns to ones that are more complex. Make sure to do your research, take your time selecting your materials, and pay attention to your patterns and any item you work on has the best chance possible of turning out as the designer intended it to.
