During Goal Setting Workshops NM Companies Can Empower Their Teams

By Andrew Reed

The business environment is a hostile one. Competition is fierce, global markets are opening up and consumers are becoming more demanding. Only those companies that can remain on the cutting edge can hope to flourish. This requires a high degree of focus. In turn, no company can focus if it does not have very specific goals that it works toward. In goal setting workshops NM companies learn how to focus their efforts towards greater success.

Many people still consider a vague notion to achieve something as an objective. Thinking that one must really bake some muffins of of these days, for example, is certainly not an objective. It is merely a vague intention. Objectives and goals need to be extremely specific. If there are no goals employees may work for long periods on vague projects without achieving any tangible results.

One of the main characteristics of a proper objective is that it will contain an active and measurable verb. Here is one terrible example. We will understand the principles that guide the manufacturing of fourth generation smart phones. This is not an objective because there is no measurable verb. One cannot measure the extent to which someone understands something. An objective simply has to contain an action verb that can be measured.

It is all good and well if an objective contains an action verb that can be measured. If the objective is to lose weight, then one can argue that the act of losing weight can indeed be observed and measured. But this will mean that the person will achieve the goal even if he loses just one gram. Gaols must therefore contain standards too. The objective should therefore rather be to lose at least seven pounds of weight.

Realistic objectives must also set a time limit. It is no use pursuing an objective that is open ended. That will allow teams to work on projects for long time periods without the need to produce at least some results. By such and such a date should therefore be part of the wording of every objective. One cannot plan if there is no time schedule.

An objective is a final desired outcome. It cannot be achieved unless it is expanded into an action plan. An action plan will contain all the smaller steps and achievements that must be completed before the objective can be deemed as achieved. Learning how to set goals should therefore always be accompanied by instructions on how to develop a realistic action plan.

Choosing a contractor to teach teams how to set and achieve goals should be undertaken with circumspect. It is important to choose a contractor that has a lot of practical experience and it may be an even better idea to choose one that also offer ongoing mentoring and support. It is always a good idea to insist upon valid references.

Without focus no business can hope to thrive. To focus it is necessary to know precisely what one want to achieve, to which standards one wants to achieve it and when one wants to achieve it. This focus can therefore only be attained through the formulation of goals.
