What To Consider When Buying Orchid Supplies

By Gary Watson

Have you looked at orchids and dreamed about growing them in your home? Many people love the delicate, exotic look that these flowers have. They may have heard that these plants can be somewhat tricky to grow and may be concerned that it will be impossible to care for them properly. While some species tend to be unforgiving if the right conditions are not present, many species will do well in your home if you have the right orchid supplies on hand to care for them. Here are some things that you need to get if you want to grow these beautiful blooms.

When many people look at orchids they immediately notice their unique appearance. They also love the way these plants make them think of exotic tropical locations. They range in size from tiny flowers to larger, more showy blooms and can be found in a number of different colors as well.

Like every plant, orchids need something to grow in and the right pot is essential when it comes to making sure your specimen is healthy and happy. This type of flower does not do well when there is a lot of water sitting around the roots. A pot that allows water to drain away is essential. If you want to protect whatever the pot is sitting on it may be a good idea to have a saucer or dish that will fit under the pot.

Unlike some plants that love being drenched with water, orchids prefer to be misted to keep them hydrated. You may want to consider a spray bottle that has an adjustable spray. This will allow you to make the stream of water finer or stronger. It will also help you control the amount of water that is getting in the pot and trickling down to the roots.

This type of flower tends to have blooms that grow at the end of thin stems or stalks. One item that you will want to have on hand is a stake that can be placed in the pot as your plant grows. You may want to get specialized clips or thin strips of Velcro that can be wrapped around the stems so that they do not droop away from their support.

Feeding your plant is also important. Different plants have different nutritional needs so it is important to check and make sure that a product's nutrient balance will work for orchids. If you are unsure you may want to speak with an employee at a flower shop or nursery before you buy a product to use on your blooms.

Some growers have found that their plants need to have their roots trimmed back. The right cutting tool can make this much easier. You may want to find models that have blades that can be cleaned thoroughly. This will help keep fungus or bacteria from transferring from one orchid to another. This can happen if you are working with several different plants at the same time.

There are many places that you can find these supplies. You may want to start your search at a garden store or a shop that specializes in orchids as they may be able to give you valuable advice. Once you know which products you like you may then be able to find them online on a site that specializes in these beautiful exotic blooms.
