Enjoy Fun Local Activities In Rome

By Michelle Ross

Rome is rightly considered one of the places everyone should see at least once. It is such a center of art, architecture, history, and culture that it has never gone out of fashion. The food, the music, the religious heritage, the influence on western culture, the museums, and the shopping make it unforgettable. You can spend a whole vacation in the city; fun local activities in Rome have everything you want.

Of course, there are the famous things that everyone should do. Why not climb the Spanish Steps from the Piazza di Spagna to the Piazza Trinta dei Monti? Why not toss a coin into the Trivoli Foountain? Why not visit the Colosseum and the Forum? You may have hated history class or found the slides in art history boring, but everything comes alive when wonders of the world are right there to touch and see.

People Square, the Piazza del Popolo, is another place to see and be seen. Even the walk to get there from your hotel (or hostel) will be something to remember. Once you've marveled at this huge plaza with its beautiful poplar trees that welcomes people to the city, you can walk down the Via del Corso, joining city residents for their evening stroll. The shops along this famous street are wonderful; window shopping will let you know why Italian leather and fashion are famous.

If you like festivals, you have come to the right place. The major Christian feasts of Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas are celebrated throughout the whole city. There are a hundred nativity scenes during the Christmas season. The religious celebrations are both solemn and joyous - not carnivals but expressions of deep faith.

Each district has a patron saint and residents join in solemn procession on the saint's special day. Local festivals are not carnivals, but there are great times of singing, dancing, and drinking. This is an opportunity to see the real residents of Rome enjoying their city.

The January Jazz Fest is a non-religious event that has become a tradition. Although winters in Rome can be cold and wet, walking is usually still feasible. Many people prefer to visit during the off-season when the summer crowds are gone and the city is more truly itself. Taking a train or bus to nearby attractions is a good way to see other parts of the city and the countryside.

everyone likes dining out. Food is one of the best things about visiting Rome. There are elegant restaurants and family-run trattorias at every turn. Roman cuisine is rich and satisfying, and the servers take a personal interest in your enjoyment. Take the opportunity to find out all about true Italian pasta. Saving room for one of the amazing desserts is difficult.

For those who have the stamina, there are literally museums too numerous to visit. Many celebrate the ancient days of this great city and its empires, but you can find one for any subject you find interesting. The Vatican museum is like overkill. You could spend every waking minute there and not see even cover the high points. You'll be stuffed full of history, beauty, and wondrous sights in this place where even the corridors hold treasure.
