Basic Tips About Custom Framing For Artwork

By Douglas Carter

You want to frame a picture or painting that you have but you do not know how. You may want to accentuate it to give more focus on what is portrayed on it. The need to protect it from things that could damage its quality might also be a reason. Another is the desire to make it complement with the rest of your house decors.

Framing is not as simple as just selecting a frame that the painting or photograph can fit in. There are things to consider in custom framing for artwork that you have. There are shops in Syracuse, NY that can help you in deciding which one and here are some tips as well.

Know the size of the artwork you have in order to determine the options available for you to use. Standard sizes are easier to find frames for because they are readily available most of the time while those of different sizes need custom frames. The mouldings of large frames must not be skinny as well so that it will be strong enough that it can support the artwork in it.

Glazing can also help protect your artwork and choose the type you need for it. There are standard ones that could protect your painting from particles and help keep its quality. Glazing that can reduce the harmful ultraviolet rays in order to protect the art from possible damage to its quality. Glazes with anti glare are used for pieces that are intended to be placed in bright areas so that people can still view it clearly. Oil paintings are not recommended having glazing on it to avoid smudges.

Another way of preservation is by using matting and it can also highlight the painting with the usual neutral color it is available in. It could add depth and could be used to put multiple photographs or paintings in one frame. The matting should be wider than the frame and its bottom should be weighted or wider than the rest.

Think about the orientation of where you would be putting the frame as well. Images on landscape work well when placed in wider walls while portrait images work well in narrower one. Multiple framed pictures could also be put together in a way that looks like a puzzle in order to fill a bigger wall if you only have small paintings available.

Consider the materials it will be made off. Wooden frames have various designs and styles that can give different feelings and look such as modern, classic and retro. Frames made from aluminum fit well with modern houses and commercial spaces.

The color of the frame is also important and must complement the image and other decorations around it. The safest colors are the neutral ones but you can choose a similar color of the major color the image has. It can give a striking effect and make the painting pop out to its surroundings.

Think of the location it will be displayed. Related pictures can have similar frames to show their connections. You can also highlight and differentiate an image to others by giving it a different and contrasting frame compared to the others.
