Steps To Follow When Planting Ginger Rhizomes

By William Myers

Most crops will have a similar way of growing, but they vary a little bit. Ginger Rhizomes will have their way of growing them due to their unique characteristics. They will only have a similar growing method with other crops in the same classification. This is a plant known to produce large attractive leaves throughout summer period and aromatic edible roots which are harvested when ready. The following is the process required when growing the crop.

First, you will be required to prepare your garden properly. An effective preparation gives an assurance of good produce. This means that you will need to spread almost two inches of manure on a well-plowed section of land. Then mix the manure with soil using a spade. This will ensure that the soil is rich in nutrients. Also, make sure the ground is well drained and has a partial shade to protect the crop against direct sun rays.

You will then be expected to acquire some ginger roots. They must be fresh, cut them into portions of about two inches with each portion having a bud. These are the sections which will be ready for planting. After that, ensure you have identified a good dry ground where you can keep them and wait for them to cure for one or two days.

After the curing process is over, take them to the garden. Dig shallow holes measuring almost half of an inch. Put each section in a hole respectively. All buds need to face upwards to help in easing the growth process. The roots should some distance away from each other like two to three inches. With such a distance, they will enough space to spread out.

It is important to note that water is an essential commodity for any plant. So, you will be needed to water the bed enough. This is to ensure that the soil is ever moist since it should not dry out completely up to the time leaves sprout. As the time goes by, increase the amount of water to once or twice every week.

Also, you will need to apply some fertilizer. The process needs to follow the recommendations put down by agriculturalists. This should be done one time in a month to ensure that they can get the required nutrients. Moreover, one must carefully read and follow the indicated instructions to apply the right amounts.

Moreover, you will be needed to cut back the foliage. This is when they are ready for harvest. In this case, one needs to cut them to within a height of two inches after which the leaves will die. Then, dig up the roots and cut off the sections of rhizome perimeter to be used for the kitchen. You may replant the main root mass later on.

After that, you need to take the cut main roots sections and prepare them for replanting process. One should always focus on the next summer season to have similar or better product than the present one. In this case, you should look for vegetation matter to be used for mulching. They will protect your replanted rhizomes and soil from cold weather conditions to be experienced during cold seasons ahead.
