Useful And Essential Facts About Mohair Merino Fiber

By Dorothy Davis

Mohair is among the highest quality natural fibers in existence today in the world. The sources of this fiber are the Angora goats. This is what makes the Angora goats to be a special kind of goat. Other ways include the fact that their bodies have only a single coat of hair. Also of great interest is the fact that there is no big difference in the quality of fibers from their secondary and primary follicles. This is what Mohair merino fiber is all about.

A majority of sheep and goat breeds usually moult each year. But, the angora goat is an exception when it comes to this as throughout the year it retains its hairs. As result, their hairs can be harvested twice in a year. The hair is normally ready for harvesting in six months. After harvesting it can be processed into more refined mohair fiber.

The hair that is harvested from angora goat is of very high quality. It has for a very long period of time considered as the best quality of fiber that human beings have access to. The hair is long and straight, but can often be curvy or wavy. The individual strands do not intertwine to make them hard to separate, but instead remain as individuals.

The level of smoothness of the fiber is very high and it is naturally lustrous as well. In most cases, the fibre appears in white color, but it is also possible to find other colors such as gray and black. Other qualities that this material has that put it above other similar fibers include resistance, elasticity, durability, resilience, soil shedding, comfort, abrasion resistance, and moisture management among others.

The flammability of that material is also low and thus an important quality in specific applications. Pilling and felting in the final product is extremely low. Even though it is durable, this material remains biodegradable and it will decompose with time if it is placed in the soil. These decomposed materials then makes fertile and good soil for one to plant crops.

This material has some of the best insulation properties. Clothes made using these hairs have the ability to keep one very warm even in the coldest of the winters. As a matter of fact, most winter clothes are made from this material. It can also be used for instance in making residential products like upholstery, curtains, and carpets.

At the moment the leading world producer of mohair is South Africa. This country is responsible for production of more than a half of mohair used in the entire world. According to research, South Africa is also the home to some of the finest mohair fiber worldwide. Second on the list of the highest worldwide producers of this product is the United States. Texas produces the highest amount compared to other states of the US.

There are other several countries around the world that are joining in the production of mohair fiber. The countries are Argentina, Nigeria, New Zealand, Lesotho, Australia, and Turkey. However, the geographical and climatic conditions of South Africa naturally favor the existence of angora goats. This is one of the major factors that are making South Africa a global leader of this product.
