Measures To Drilling Noise Control

By Lucia Weeks

Living in a neighborhood full of trucks and rigs can be a hard time. Having to put up with too much light, foul smell, heavy trucks and traffic and most of all vibrations. These vibrations a times can be synonymous to tremors and accompanied by bangs louder than lightning. Noise for that matter is undoubtedly the most irritating and unbearable of all. There are however ways to which you could go about drilling noise control.

Drilling operations use heavy and sophisticated mechanical equipment. These equipment generate the dreaded noise. From top drive, shale shakers, cooling air systems, pipe handling, draw work, air and fluid power systems, metalwork, hammering, mud pumps, fork lifts and trucks. Just to mention. This could go on for nights, weeks even months. There are cases where such construction takes place even in the summer when all people want, is to relax.

The first method is on the nature of equipments you use during the process of drilling. There is a new range of equipment recommended for this.. This equipment do have a number of modifications specially done to mitigate this. They include insulated containers for sound in the generators, for the draw works, hydraulics and air compressors. For the pipe handling, an iron roughneck fitted can help in minimizing the commotion.

The science behind the new rig is phenomenal in commotion prevention, a must have for a commotion friendly company. It uses an automated pipe handling system and minimizes the noise caused by elevators. It is internally fitted with vibration dampening fittings that prevent vibrations that can arise. This rig is completely covered with sound proof material which includes the motors and pinions that are noisy in nature.

How you transport your goods is key for efficiency. You need to minimize the emitted commotion as much as possible. Moving in and out at night is better because of less traffic. Trucks do cause a lot of noise. There are ways to reduce their noise and include, insulations and mechanical adjustments. Insulations fitted in the compressors and steel gratings. Switching off reverse beeps and using flash lights instead of too much hooting.

In some cases, the machinery used still makes noise to some extent. For this, the use of sound walls does help. This is done by creating a wall 20 meters from the drilling site. This wall should be 2 meters long and 10 meters wide surrounding the whole site. A sound proof material should be equipped to prevent it from being filled with gas. It should also be strong enough to withstand vibrations caused by the rig or drill it covers.

The other way to minimize the noise is to work with your crew in this. They are the ones using this equipment and for a fact they too can play a role in some way. Set peak limits and detectors towards this to guide them through. This will also in a way help you redirect traffic. They should avoid metal caused noise, shouting and whistling and running empty shakers.

Drilling as a whole is diverse. There are a number of choices you could use to reduce the commotion. Get to use the best option that works with your budget and activity.
