Understanding How To Choose Vinyl Signs In Midland TX

By Toni Vang

Vinyl signs are useful in providing information to people or advertising the business. The material is durable and looks professional. Its appearance is more modern than wood or metal, and it does not degrade over time as these do. However, not all vinyl is the same, so it pays to know what each type is like when ordering your vinyl signs in Midland TX.

The scientific term for vinyl is PVC. It's an established material in industry and is used for many different products, from paint to water pipes. In everyday language, it would probably just be called plastic, and it's often white. Where it's used for signs, it's available in two forms - coated and laminated.

One of the main issues in choosing which type of PVC to use is the environmental temperature of its intended application. At low temperatures, laminated PVC starts to become brittle. This threatens the stability of its moorings to walls or other structures and also makes it unreliable where it's under pressure, such as from pedestrians. If you are interested in using vinyl, you should first determine what temperature range it can tolerate. Incidentally, laminated PVC is also not suitable for hot air welding.

Laminated PVC can also not be used in hot air welding. It's of a lower quality, in fact, but without being substandard. Coated PVC is higher quality. The issue that arises is that laminated vinyl costs less, while at the same time it has lower specs. The central question is then as to what it is going to be used for and under what conditions, since in some cases it may not be an option at all.

The alternative is coated PVC. Coated PVC is more resistant to lower temperatures, but it's generally more tolerant to wear and tear and other environmental factors. It lasts longer and it can be hot air welded. The laminated version is harder to wind off its roll; coated PVC is softer and more pliable. Despite this fact, however, it's more difficult to tear.

Printing is part of the sign-making process. Designers should understand how to design for vinyl, because elaborate, extremely complex designs might not be printable on it. This is a problem where they are part of the enterprise's usual branding. Coated PVC is easier to print on reliably, but the customer should first confirm that their design can, in fact, be printed properly on the material to be used.

The issue of price also arises in choosing the most suitable material for the signage. Coated PVC is more expensive but higher quality and lasts longer. The usual trade-off between lifespan and price then comes into play. But ultimately the customer should try to understand the specifications of each material, something which their supplier can advise them on, otherwise the material that they choose might not be ideal for the environment that they want to use it in.

The attractive feature of vinyl signage is that it can be produced in-house. But this implies in turn that its users should always obtain the necessary information on the materials available before they commence making the signage. Vinyl suppliers in Midland TX can advise you on what to use, and how.
