Using A Company For Photo Restoration

By Thomas Murray

Most people will have boxes or books full of photographs and some may be very old and badly worn. The condition of photos can deteriorate over time due to poor storage, sun damage or from being torn. There are now businesses that can perform photo restoration and return your old photographs to the original condition or in some cases improve them.

There are a couple of options open to you when you are searching for a company to carry out restoration work on your photographs. There are shops in many high streets who will offer this service. The other place to look is online and there are a lot of firms available who can do the work for you at a reasonable price.

When you have selected the pictures that need attention you can take them into your local store or send them away to be worked on. The company will examine the pictures and contact you to explain what they plan to do and to give you a price. Pricing will depend on a few things such as how many pictures, what work needs doing and how many final prints you are ordering. If you have a lot of photos that need attention you may receive a discount.

The firms that do restorations can fix many problems with old or damaged pictures. Faded snaps can be brought back to life and also colors can be enhanced to make them as they were before. Tears and scratches can also be repaired in most cases and when returned to you the repairs will be invisible.

Other services offered by the restoration companies are color enhancements where black and white or sepia pictures can be colored. The company will use special computer software to add color to a picture whilst retaining the original detail. Your old pictures will remain as they were and will be sent back to you with the new copies.

When the restoration work has been carried out the company will send you proof copies of the new images for you to look at. When you are happy they can be printed or stored as digital copies on discs, flash drives or other media. Digital copies are always useful even if you have hard copies as they can be used to make future copies. Most of the firms who do restoration work will retain copies of your images and keep the on file in case you need to order more.

If you need to send your snaps away to be restored and you are using a courier service it is a good idea to get insurance cover for the photos. Careful packaging is also essential to protect them against damage while they are on the move. Any special instructions or requests should be emailed to the company before they start working on your photographs.

When you have received your restored prints they should be properly stored in photograph albums or boxes. They should always be kept out of direct sunlight and well away from any areas of moisture. If you only have digital copies then they should be copied onto another device and kept safe in case the original images are lost.
