How To Become A Qualified Elevator Repair Technician

By Shawn Hunter

Escalators have become a common feature in most shopping malls and other public places. Escalator technicians are individuals who are trained on how to carry out installations, maintenance and repair tasks. Considering the sensitivity of these devices, not many people are licensed to become elevator repair technicians.

Recall that elevator installer work is cumbersome. In most cases, they are required to move around heavy metal parts usually made of steel around new buildings that are to be fitted with such equipment. At times, they may work overtime especially in cases of emergency or when the lifts are experiencing delays in their functioning. It is for this reason that they are on call whether day or night.

Escalator installers learn through apprenticeship. This is where they are assigned to an experienced installers in the first place. It is done parallel to their college programs. The program has two thousand hours. During this period, basics in math, physics and electronics are taught when one joins the course. During this period also a little stipend is offered to apprentices and it is increased as time goes by.

However, before someone is accredited with installation or repair certificate in Los Angeles, CA, there is need for the training committee to examine the individual first. Licensing is therefore vital upon completion of the apprenticeship. On a regular basis, after registration, there is need for individuals to get refresher courses. This is because, with technology, regular upgrading and updating is required in order to increase efficiency of the escalators.

The job also requires one to possess a number of skills. To begin with, computer proficiency is vital. Escalators come with pre-installed software that needs maintenance and upgrading. Trouble shooting software comes in handy when problems arise in the first place. Technical skills also come in handy since installers use tools such as pressure gauges, levers and recorders in order to ensure that the lift performs different functions as desired. Since this is trade, one should be in possession of good analytical, communication and judgmental skills in order to interact with different types of clients.

The installation services attract charges. The charges may be calculated based on a number of ways such as hourly basis or per piece work. The expert is allowed to set the cost. However, clients are also allowed to negotiate. The good thing with this job is that the pay is good even though learning the skill does not take so much time.

One is therefore required to be physically fit. This is a sound success tip for this trade since one requires moving heavy metallic parts hence develop a good fitness plan in the first place. By doing this, one will be of good health and avoid common injuries that come with the trade.

At first, one may have to get employed. Upon building their reputation, it is easier to get independent tasks. With time, it is easier to build a successful career. As more people continue appreciating elevators, more people will be required to join this career.
