By Nancy Richardson

Black bamboo is a certain species of bamboo that produces flowers at some point during its life cycle. It belongs to the Poaceae grass family. The scientific name of this plant is Phyllostachys nigra. Although widely cultivated in the whole world now, the place of origin is in the Chinese province of Hunan. Today many people from all the continents raise black bamboo plants in pots for cosmetic reasons in their homes and offices.

Old plants have green, slender canes that form arch shape. Canes turn in color to black after three seasons of growth. Close relatives to this plant include f. Henonis. Most full-grown canes can reach five meters in height. Height is influenced by many factors including fertility of the soil and exposure to light. Production of flowers and seeds is very rare and lasts shortly. In fact, it is extremely hard to spot one that has flowers. Underground rhizomes are the main mode of reproduction.

There are many uses for Phyllostachys nigra in the society today. In its native home in China, people use young leaves and stems as a source of food, while mature canes are used as a source of fuel and lumber. The lumber is used for making several kinds of furniture and musical instruments. Examples of product made from the canes are floorings.

Many companies have specialized in the production and distribution of this plant to members of the public. Such companies get involved in all the stages of production from raising seeds in seedbeds to packaging and shipping to clients. Distributors may provide already potted plants to clients or one may buy the plant and choose them pot on their own. Most suppliers provide that option.

Buyers can make their orders through company websites maintained by suppliers. Usually buyers have a variety of payment methods they can choose from. Companies that are serious with business make deliveries within the shortest time possible depending on where the buyer is located. When placing an order, one should provide all relevant information to avoid delays and reduce delivery time.

The uses of potted black bamboo plants are very many in modern lifestyles. The pots may be placed inside or outside buildings. When they occupy outside space, they make the vicinity look beautiful. Coupling the beauty they present with resistance to drought and frost, they become very attractive to beginners in gardening. The quality of being able to resist drought and frost makes them very preferable by many people worldwide.

This bamboo species need little care to thrive. When placed inside the house or office, the plant not only serves aesthetic purposes but also helps in freshening the air. Plants utilize the carbon dioxide exhaled by people for the manufacture of its own food. In doing so, it prevents an accumulation of CO2 from forming inside buildings. Therefore, it produces a freshening effect by eliminating CO2 and pumping oxygen into the air.

Another benefit presented by the plant is minimization of noise in offices. The leaves of this plant are effective at absorbing noise along corridors and halls. Such noise could be originating from echoes from hard surfaces in the room. Noise reduction results from the modification of acoustic properties.
