How To Teach Kids Embroidery

By Kenneth Wallace

Embroidery can be a fun thing to learn provided the teacher is capable enough to make it an exciting thing for kids. To teach kids embroidery, you need to keep it all simple and easy for them. Remember you are teaching kids so it has to be simple otherwise if its something difficult or in detail, they will start to get bored and loose interest in the whole learning project.

Besides keeping it simple, teach them the basics first and then go for the complicated stuff. If they learn the basics thoroughly, it means their foundation is solid and later on they can tackle with any sort of detailed designs and patterns without any difficulty. Running stitch and back stitch are the simplest of them all and once they learn that, it becomes easy to teach them rest of the stuff.

To start off with, instead of giving them new material to stitch one, use old fabrics so that they can practice on it as much as they can. Giving them a new project straightaway is not a wise decision at all. Give them some time to get used to all the stitches and then allocate a new project to them.

In the beginning keep your lessons as short as you can so that the kids remain engaged throughout the session. Its a fact that the attention span of children is very short as compared to adults and embroidery is something that requires their attention when they are learning initially so its very important that each and every child feels interested enough.

To make it a fun thing for them, you can use colorful threads, patterns that they find interesting. For instance, you could make the use of animated cartoon characters as the pattern for embroidery designs. Give them the opportunity to choose their own stitching pattern as well as the colors. It could be that the final product might not be up to the mark but the aim is to teach kids something that they have never done before.

The material you utilize, similar to the strings and the needles ought to be something appropriate for youthful kids to handle. On the off chance that the strings are chunkier and the texture is delicate, it gets simpler for the youngsters to handle the texture. On the off chance that the texture is solid, they will think that its difficult to deal with the texture.

Instead of giving individual lessons, children learn well if they are taught in a group. Its a fun process to learn something with your friends instead of learning on your own which can be pretty boring at times.

Keep in mind that needles and scissors are sharp and kids need to act carefully whilst using these objects. Its the responsibility of their teacher to ensure they know perfectly well how to handle these object with care and without hurting themselves. Another thing that could possibly motivate your students is to reward them when they do good because recognizing their talent is very important to build their interest even further into something like embroidery.
