The Rewards Of Ventura County Group Counseling

By George Powell

Group counselling was something that many people would stay away from in the past. Not many liked the idea of sharing their problems with other people. Usually it was talk therapy that people would be drawn to. Folks felt as if they were in a safe environment when they began to talk to a counsellor privately. However, Ventura County group counseling has really grown.

There are people who will especially take advantage of this. Many therapists have been trained especially for this type of therapy. Working with groups is not a walk in the park. You are dealing with a lot of people at once. Some people will want to take over and other will want to bottle up their feelings. A sense of balance needs to be created within the group.

Talking to other members in the group like this can be hugely rewarding. You will find that someone finally understands what you are going through. You may have supportive friends and family members. However, when they haven't been through the same thing, they don't really have a great amount of empathy. They are not always able to put themselves in your shoes. This is the difference.

The same applies to the therapist that you have a one on one session with. You may have an intimate relationship with a person like this. However, it can be different because they are professional in what they do. They are understanding, caring and understanding. But they have not been through the same thing, so you may feel that they can't identify with you.

During this time, there will be various things that members will do. The therapist will have methods which be most effective, depending on what they are suffering from. Sometimes, a person needs to tell the other members what goals they have achieved. Some people will need to tell the group where they need to improve. Role play can be included. Many people just enjoy talking with one another.

There are also groups that you don't have to pay for, but they are well recognized. They are not led by a psychologist and they are much bigger. However, it is the support that many people appreciate. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous stand out as examples of some of the bigger well recognized groups. Many people find that they are not able to skip a meeting.

They will connect with others because they will feel the same way when someone expresses him or herself. They will feel that this sense of identity brings them closer together. The relationship strengthens and often they feel that the support will lead to additional backup outside of the group. It is more of an informal type of support that they can look forward to.

Groups are also a good way in which one can get out and socialize. Sometimes, a person with depression or those individuals who are bereaved will feel that they are more isolated. They won't feel like going out. This can be the first step. They don't have to put up a front because they will be in the same place as everyone else.
