How A Leather Knife Roll Is Made

By Daniel Wilson

Chefs do love using knives. Moreover, they bring these tools with them wherever they go. They have become one of the important tools in preparing food.

Since the knives are sharp objects, they need to be kept somewhere safe and discreet. The chefs carry with them a bag that is called leather knife roll. This is mainly used to keep sharp kitchen objects like knives. They can be bought from kitchenware stores or online shops. But, you can make it on your own, as long you got the necessary tools. Actually, it is simpler. The next paragraphs will enumerate and explain briefly and concisely.

Prepare the kitchen knives or other tools. Arrange them in a best way possible on a rectangular and flat kraft paper. This step will help you measure and determine the size of your knife roll. Remember that each knife needs extra leather on one side of the blade so that a pocket will be formed. After deciding on the layout, the length and width of the areas occupied by each knife will be measured. This will help you determine the size you might need for carrying or folding over the handles of a knife and covering the blades.

Look for the best leather. Search online or go to the store nearest you. Whether you are buying online or on a shop, show to them your layout and explain to them about the knife roll that you are going to making. Once they understand what you really need, they will be the ones who will provide you the best type to use. Furthermore, the size should be larger by four hundred percent.

Prepare all the necessary tools and materials. The basic tools and supplies may include mallet, needles, or glue exclusively for it, and many others. Some may prefer using different tools instead of following the standard lists of materials.

Mockup layout on paper. In this step, a kraft paper is used. It is where you will create an outline of a cowhide. Using a marker pen, follow the shape of a cowhide which is laid down in a paper and cut out the drawing by following its shape.

Finalization of layout. Make some necessary and corrective changes. Arrangement of knives will help you do the trick. This will help you observe whether or not the design and layout is just right.

After finalizing the design on paper, this is now the perfect time to transfer and apply it on leather. This is the step where you will also assemble the knives. Unfold the kraft paper where it is finalized and have it placed on a cowhide. Each piece of the paper is cut. Then, glue and assemble these pieces. Attach also its straps. Once done, let the knives sit and have the leather stretched for three to five days or more.

To assure of security and prevent it to be damaged at early times of usage, make sure that it is properly sewed and glued. Finalize everything. Before doing so, make sure that the knives are properly placed. Make some adjustments on the design if there is any. Speaking of glue, leather glue is much preferred in this case but if you want to use an ordinary, it may be acceptable.
