Kids' Party Ideas: Birthday Fireworks!

By Luisa Sharpe

Party planning can be a lot of fun, especially when planning an event for children. However, if you haven't planned a party before, it can be daunting. Whether you are planning for your own child, or for a friend's or sibling's child, you may need some ideas to get you started. Remember to stay within your budget! Birthday fireworks are great, but not every one is able to afford something that extravagant.

If you are able to go all out for a huge celebration, by all means, do it. But that is not a necessity to plan a party that the children will enjoy. Oftentimes, kids are unaware of the cost of activities; they only know whether or not they're fun. Here are some ideas to keep in mind as you begin your planning.

1. Have a theme for the party. Decorating will be so much easier if you do this. Choosing a theme will be simple if your child has a favorite movie or character. Doc McStuffins, Frozen, or Transformers; you can find party supplies on these themes as most party supply stores. You child could even wear an outfit that goes along with the theme!

2. Make the menu simple. You will thank yourself later if you choose food with minimal preparation and minimal clean-up. Pizza, chicken, and hot dogs are all good options. You can place an advance order and get them prepared, perhaps even delivered! You can also order a cake that fits with the party theme (although there is nothing like homemade cake, if you are a baker.) Supplement the main food items with a few snacks and beverages, and you're good to go!

3. Have one large activity and several supplemental ones. Your main activity can be a huge thing like a petting zoo or a fireworks display, but it doesn't have to be. It can also be something free and simple, like a baseball game in the backyard or a movie in the living room. It's all in the way it is planned and presented. Another good idea is to keep some bubbles, coloring books, and extra toys around for kids who get bored or distracted from the main event.

4. Add special touches. A candy table is sure to make any party a hit. A special birthday chair for your child will make him or her feel special. You can also send home goodie bags with all of the guests.

5. Ask others for help. You should definitely not be the only adult involved in the planning OR the execution of the party. If you have siblings, enlist them. Get your friends to help. Ask two or three parents to stay with their kids at the party and help supervise. This will make everything run more smoothly.

No matter what your theme or activity, organized planning will be the key! The kids will be entertained by clowns, fireworks, characters in costume, or just good food and a fun game. You will get the hang of party planning after doing it a couple of times, and it will get easier!
