Let Us Stop Gender Discrimination In Sports Media

By Enid Hinton

The victimization of people based on their sex is what is known as sex discrimination. It has mostly resulted from the old believes that a man is more significant than a woman. This leads to a decrease in the participation of women in many fields. They are not given equal chances and opportunities in either professional or amateur sports. Gender discrimination in sports media does not just incline to one sex, but sways towards both of them.

Gender ethics is often mistaken for sex. One should be able to differentiate that sex refers to the body of a man or a woman. Although there are people who consider themselves to be neither. Gender on the other hand refers to socially judged behaviors that are smeared to bodies of either sex. It is the socially defined characteristics of masculinity or feminity.

Young men withdraw from sports because of being viewed an unmanly men. At times they are even labelled as gay without considering their sexual identity. The same tactic is used to victimize women by branding them as non-feminine. It also gets to that point where they are called lesbians, with no regard to their sexuality. The judgments of this people in society are in relation to gender but are formed from their opinions of the physical body that they see.

The number of the women in sport journalism is growing fast. This has of course caused a lot of controversial thoughts in the recent years. Most of the traditionalist view the sporting industry as a kingdom belonging to men. These ladies have had to tolerate a lot of criticism from them.

These ladies are often given the grounds to feature short sessions before the games begin. Making a report on the ongoing game is a problem since the crowd behind constantly devote their time to make fun on them since they are ladies. Their careers and reputation are judged by how they look.

There was a debate to establish whether or not they should be allowed into the locker rooms after the games. When they are denied access, the male gets the competitive advantage in the field. When both sexes are denied access, the males recent the females for having their access deprived.

All in all, there are stereotypes associated with each profession. This is a picture we create in our minds while we are small. The job of a man or a woman? No. As we grow we should learn that these stereotypes are wrong and come up with strategies to erase them from our minds. We need to set ourselves free from such kind of victimizing convictions. It hurts other people and you may also get hurt in the process.

Breaking the stereotype barrier is not a walk in the park. Changing the thoughts and convictions of masses of people is harder than one can imagine. Our dear journalists should therefore focus their energy towards becoming better writers and reporters. In that way we will be satisfied knowing that sex cannot be a hindrance to work.
