Information Concerning Boronizing As Used For Surface Hardening

By Janine Hughes

This procedure manly involves having the main objective of making other metals or mixture of metals to be hard. It is done using atoms from boron. When it is made harder, then it becomes stronger and is able to withstand different kinds of conditions including the ability to resist wear. The following information is all about boronizing which is basically using boron as a component of metal hardening.

This process makes the materials be able to last up to five times longer than when they were subjected under other types of hardening. This method is also known as boriding and it can be achieved in a number of ways and this includes packing the piece of metal in a boriding mixture and heating it to a temperature of nine hundred degrees Celsius.

This method is often used on steel but it is also applicable to a variety of alloys too; for the purpose of treatment purposes, a wide range of materials may be used including carbon steels which are plain, alloys made from alloys and nickel among others. Materials which are not compatible with the process are nitrogen, aluminum among others.

Once this process is done, there are a number of properties that the new material now attains. These include improved hardness; they then become hard to wear out. They are also able to sustain a high exposure to heat and they are also less likely to be affected by strong acids. To add on to this, friction is also able to be sustained. This makes machinery be able to last longer and be in a better condition.

The hardened elements usually have high melting points. Many of the individuals in the industry prefer this as a type of making surfaces together. This is because it has proved to be very successful and worth trying out and most metals have their surfaces hardened in this way. This is only under the condition that they are compatible with the entire process.

Materials which have undergone this process can be applied in a number of ways. They can be used to make agricultural equipment which are easy to wear, it can be used for oil field drilling tools. Practically, it is used for any steel instrument which wears easily; it has very many advantages hence a method which is highly advocated for as its enhancing abilities have been proven to be factual.

The length of time taken for this process to be complete ranges from a time span of sixty minutes to a period of say two hours. While using laser beams to carry out this procedure, one aspect is guaranteed. This is the fact that the properties of the materials used for the base remain unchanged. This is the reason as to why this method is highly advocated.

To sum up the above, this is a very important process which is supposed to be upheld by all means. Each year, the industries lose a lot of money due to wear and tear of their machinery. They have to incur more expenses buying other equipment and carrying out regular maintenance. This can be avoided by applying this technique which brings about profit instead of losses.
