Things You Should Know Concerning Cattleya Orchids

By Sandra Jackson

These are one of the most flowering plants that are used for decorations around the homestead. Crossbreeding between them produces varieties of flower colors. They are pale yellow both their stems and leaves. They might produce flowers according to varying day lengths though many are known to produce flowers twice a year. Below are things one should know concerning Cattleya orchids.

Adequate light and temperature. These two conditions are important for the growth and blooming of this kind of plants. The light exposure should be sufficient to provide enough lighting to promote their pale yellow color. This is the healthy color appearance of the plants. The light also should not be excess to avoid damaging and burning the leaves. The temperatures should be at minimum degrees of 55 during the day. It should range from 65 to 85 and a night temperature of above 60.

Watering periods and its effects. The amount of water received by these plants also matter a lot. The amount of watering done should be as minimum as possible. This ensures they stay dehydrated for long periods of dryness. Although also, the watering is done should vary with variations of the humidity experienced in the environment. The higher the humidity, the less the watering. Clay pot containers are known to promote easy evaporation of water hence are supposed to be used for planting these plants.

The process of putting fertilizers. The fertilizer available range from types but the best should be used to promote blooming growth. There is a specific process of applying these fertilizers, and each must be observed to ensure the right results are obtained. The compost is supposed to be put during watering periods. The flushing with clear water is done between the periods of application. The used fertilizer is supposed to be diluted.

Periods of flowering. The flowering frequency tends to vary depending on the environmental changes experienced in their growing environment. Temperature ranges, light exposure to them are some of those biotic factors affecting their growth and flowering. The periods of day length also affect this process. These factors too are essential to eliminate the chances of fungal infections.

The re-potting process. These plants after a while, they are supposed to be reported to ensure proper growth. After a given long period, their roots tend to grow and fill the container in which they are potted in. Therefore, a reporting process is required. Another container is brought where the plant is divided into three, and the three different portions are potted in different containers.

Fungal diseases and pests. Pests are not a common phenomenon for these plants. Different infections may be experienced according to the care taken on these plants. If they are kept clogged for long periods then, the fungal disease can be a problem to them.

Pruning and reblooming. The process of pruning is to be observed to make sure the plant is brought back to the normal condition to promote growth. It is also essential that the pruning is occasionally done as it determines reblooming.
