Creating a Plan for Your Hiking Trip

By Joseph Tranturder

Perhaps you are a Boy Scout, or have always had an interest in how to carve objects out of wood. Maybe you want to make a gift for a loved one, or you simply want to carve your favorite animal to set atop your mantle.

Many who hike do so on short day hikes for the purpose of seeing some new attraction or to visit a remote place while others use hiking to get them farther into the mountains, forests or other areas so that they can enjoy a respite of camping and outdoor living. By learning how to plan effectively and fully for a hiking trip, a person and company will be able to better enjoy their hiking trip.

However, seldom mentioned in such discussions are the many splendors of art that are created not with a standard brush or chisel, but with the unique application and use of fire. Some may even be surprised that such an artistic method exists, but the truth is that even a destructive force of nature such as fire can and has been used to create some of the most stunning displays of art.

Again, this may seem like an oversimplification of a planning process but choosing the specific area that the group will go hiking in will determine every other succeeding factor in the planning process. Choosing a location to hike will entirely depend upon the desires of the group, whether they choose to explore the mountains, coastline trails, a nearby forest, or a sprawling dessert.

Commonly referred to by those familiar with the practice, modern wood burning or pokerwork will use heated tools, often call pokers and thus the nominal designation pokerwork, to create fabulous works of art with fire and wood as the medium.

And the Internet is always available for you to find quality woods. The Internet is a good place to buy your wood if you're looking for something a little cheaper. When you have the wood you desire, the next step is to trace your pattern onto the wood using a stylus and a piece of carbon paper.

Try to keep the paper in the same place the whole time you're tracing so the outline is not disjointed on the piece of wood. Next, take a utility knife from your set of wood carving tools and carve around the outline of your pattern. To continue with your carving, carve out the background of your pattern.

When working with leather, wood burners are required to use specialized vegetable tanned leather specifically made for the purpose as modern leather tanning methods use chemicals that become toxic when burned. But with this specially tanned leather, pyrography artist can create magnificent designs and depictions upon a leather surface.

Other niceties such as bringing a walking stick may also wish to be planned for. Walking stick and cane supplies can be secured and planned for which will help to aid the hiker along the trail.

Many magnificent creations of art have been crafted from the steady hands of those who practice pyrography. And with their close connection with wood working in general their discipline of etching beauty with fire will continue for as long as people admire quality art and craftsmanship.
