How To Set Up Your Own Garden Fountains

By Nita McKinney

What comes to many peoples minds when they hear garden fountains are statues that are expertly decorated and well designed to spill out water. Most individuals think it is very difficult and costly to make a fountain. This is not right. It is easy to construct your own fountain using locally available materials at home. You can use any container that can hold water.

The idea behind a fountain is spilling of water on the sides of a container so that it can be collected in a basin found below and recycled using a pump. To build your own fountain you need to buy a water pump and a rubber plug. You also need a shovel, a plastic basin, a vessel to hold water, a drill, garden rocks, cutting shears as well as metal screening.

You should start by choosing a container to use on the fountain. Decide on a suitable vessel that will form a good base and hold the water. It is advisable to use an urn that is decorated. You need a drainage hole. If the container does not have one you should drill one at the bottom. The hole should be about 2 inches in diameter so that it can accommodate a water tube.

The next step is to dig a hole where you want to place the fountain. Ensure that the hole is wide and deep enough to accommodate the plastic basin. Make sure that the basin you use is wider than the fountain so that it can hold the water that will spill over from the sides. The basin should be placed inside the hole such that the top is at the same level with the soil line.

The metal screening should be placed at the top of the basin. It should be wide enough to cover the basin well. The power cord as well as the water tube should pass through the metal screening. Make a hole using the cutting shears at the center position of the screening.

Position the water pump on the floor of the water basin. Pass the power cable and the water tube through the hole on the metal screening. The screening should then be placed on top of the basin.

The fountain plug should be able to create a perfect seal. After sealing the hole place the base on the screening. Connect the power to an electrical socket to get the device working. It is good to hide the power cord behind rocks and plants. Alternatively, you can bury it a few inches below the ground.

The receptacle as well as the basin underground should be filled completely with water. Hide the screening using rocks and colored stones. If you follow the right tips you should have a working fountain without having to spend much. One way of improving your backyard is creating garden fountains. They are easy to make at home. You do not have to spend a lot of money on hiring a professional to do the work for you.
