How To Take Care Of Teak Patio Furniture

By Charles Rockelman

Teak outdoor furniture is the best quality outdoor furniture imaginable. Outdoor teak furniture is also extremely simply to look after. Teak has special qualities which make it the best for use outside. Outdoor teak furniture requires a small amount attention to last a long time.

Teakwood is one of the most costly woods. However, you should consider that teak garden furniture is a worthwhile investment due to its durability.

It is best to clean up your teak outdoor furniture sometimes to undo a buildup of dirt. You can spray water using a garden hose under low pressure to rinse the dirt and dust away. Afterwards, using a soft brush, scrub the furniture not too roughly with a mix of water, dish soap, and a couple tablespoons of bleach. Using bleach too often will lighten the wood so adding bleach is not necessary. Then rinse once more with clean water. Dry with a towel or large rag finally.

Teak outdoor furniture that is kept outside will naturally start to gradually fade color from the golden honey shade of freshly cut wood to become a silver-gray color. This process of teakwood becoming gray is normal and just affects the outer appearance. It does not affect the stability of your patio furniture.

A few people like the golden color of brand new teak outdoor furniture and treat with teak oil as a way to restore the gold color. However, teak oil is going to cause more trouble because it has to be reapplied every three or four once you start using it. Oils can also raise the chance for mildew to form. It is better to treat with teak sealer annually after cleaning your teak patio furniture if you want to try to keep the golden coloring.

You might choose to use furniture covers for your teak furniture, especially in the winter months or if your home is in an area that has a lot of dust. If you select to use covers, make certain to use a furniture cover made from a breathable material. Do not get a plastic cover which would trap moisture. This raises the chance of mold and mildew growing on the wood.

Stubborn stains including wine or coffee can get taken care of with a light sanding of the very top layer of the teak garden furniture. You can begin with a medium paper and then finish with a fine grade paper to make the surface of the teak smooth. Sanding is also a method to bring out the honey coloring of teak furniture because you expose a new layer of teak wood that is still saturated with natural oils.

Regardless if your furniture is a teak adirondack chair or a teak dining table, a little maintenance will go far.

So you can see, your teak furniture will last decades with not even much care for you to do. Because it lasts for so long, teak is better than other types of wood. You can know that any teak outdoor set you get at this time should be handed down to your children.
