Basics Concerning Type J Thermocouple

By Kate McMahon

Type J thermocouple is same as other thermocouples with some differences highlighted in this writing. First, type j thermocouple is a form of temperature-sensing device utilized in several applications in various sectors to detect temperature changes. It has two metal conductors made of dissimilar substances. The two conductors produce a voltage upon warming. This is the functioning principle around which all forms of thermocouples in use currently are built.

The idea that junctions between 2 metal conductors produce a voltage was invented by a physician known as Thomas Seebeck. Although any type of metal conductor may be used, it might not produce sufficient voltage. Therefore, there are standard metal conductors that have huge temperature gradients, predictable, and repeatable output voltages that are used. In model J thermocouple, copper-nickel and iron alloy is used.

The part of the junction made of iron forms the positive terminal while Constantan also referred to as copper-nickel alloy creates the negative side. The alloy consists of about 55 percent of copper and 45 percent nickel. The positive terminal, is white in color while the negative one is red. The leads should be handles with care when connecting.

This sensor is the second most utilized and most popular after model K. It is preferred for general purpose activities that never involve watery or moisture conditions. It may also be used in reducing, air, vacuum, and oxidizing environments up to a maximum temperature of 760 degrees for the higher gage varieties. It should not be utilized in sulfurous environments above the temperature of 540 degrees. Rusting in the positive lead because of iron makes its application in subzero environments limited.

The manufacturers of the device protect it using appropriate mineral insulation and suitable outer sheath. Because of this protection, it can function up to a maximum temperature of 816 degrees Celsius. This value might vary hence one should check the recommended value of the manufacturer. Within the temperature ranges of 371 to 538 degrees Celsius, it is not susceptible to aging. The expected service life of a thermocouple is only limited by the size of connecting wires.

The sensitivity of these appliances is around 50 microvolts per unit degree of temperature. Such a value of sensitivity is elegant for several general purpose applications. Different classes of these gadgets are used in different industries like medical research, food, and science among others. When picking a gadget, one has to consider thickness of connecting wires, its response time, and sensitivity. The seller must also test it before taking it away.

Thermocouples are replaceable components in any system. This means that they may be bought separately and in case they malfunction, they can be substituted. They have to be inspected once in a while so as to catch flaws. They differ in cost from a handful of dollars to thousands of dollars.

Type J thermocouple may be purchased from local shops almost everywhere around the globe. The specialized models may be ordered directly from manufacturers themselves. Direct orders are custom-made according to the needs of the customer. Such orders are delivered to the address given by the customer once complete.
