By Kristen Baird

Taking charge of your spiritual life is as hard as exercising, loosing weight, quitting smoking and such lifestyle changes. The first steps are difficult to make and very demanding. This should not discourage you. There is a definite place to start that will guarantee good result. You must say, I will take charge of my spiritual life journey.

As a human being, every day is a struggle to become a deeper and more meaningful person. The challenge lies in the fact that unlike physical change, inner change does not have tangible beacons. By going to the gym, taking health pills and restraining from visiting certain places, you can achieve physical change. The spirit is different because it is untouchable.

Transformation begins when you make an inner decision to change. Since there are no physical results, the change manifests in different behaviors. The heart begins to desire more, pure and authentic living. This is the best way to take control of your personal destiny.

There is a voice that speaks within and gives you directions. The voice is usually about the right things to do and what to avoid. In order to arrive at your destiny or to find your authentic personality, listen to this voice. This voice governs your thoughts and actions and will lead to conflict if it is ignored.

The authentic self is revealed when you are in touch with your inner self. The best way to reconnect with your inner and authentic self is through discernment. According to experts, spending time alone allows you to evaluate your life and identify areas that require attention. This is the way to correct waywardness of the spirit and avoid internal conflict.

There are several crucial questions that must be answered during discernment. They range from, What if I was more loving? Kinder? Compassionate? Generous? Humble? Less judgmental? Less selfish? More patient, etc? Finding an answer to the question is a crucial step toward regaining control.

An issue that has been bothering experts is whether change can be achieved on your own. The conclusion after numerous studies is that an external force is required to achieve personal transformation. Just like renovation of a house, a new force is required. This is strong religious commitment. It offers a solid ground to anchor your life.

Spiritual formation is a universal characteristic of human beings. It determines your attitudes, values and moral standing. It is through neglect that the inner being weakens leading to deviation. In order to restore this, you must undergo a spirit-led process that brings you as close as possible to the likeness of Christ. The bible says that we must endeavor to be like Christ.

The irony of change is that you cannot complete it on your own and neither can it happen without your active participation. The first step is to desire and make a decision to change. When this happens, you gain clarity of purpose and your destiny can be achieved. Restoration begins to happen.
