Collecting Vintage Garage Signs Is Popular

By Jill Faulkner

There is a broad range of collectors seeking automotive related pieces for their homes and garages. Vintage garage signs are one of the more popular categories among collectors. This is likely because they are readily available at many different price points. Their popularity also stems from their interesting graphics and bold colors, which makes them perfect for many types of decor.

Automotive collectibles have become so popular because there are so many different kinds to choose from. This makes the category appeal to a broad range of collectors as there is likely something for everyone's budget. While gas pumps and vintage cars have become very popular in the high end category, vintage signs are one of the more popular affordable items, which is why they appeal to so many.

This type of sign could include anything from a small tin sign that shows a shop's working hours to a large neon signs that would hang outside to advertise the name of the shop. Of course, the larger it is and the more working parts it has the more expensive it would be for the collector to acquire it. However, both the large and small varieties are equally popular with collectors.

Oil and gas advertising as well as automobile manufacturer signs are the most common themes in this category. They often are seen in many different shapes. Circles and custom shapes are a bit less common while squares seem to be more common. The more common shapes are of course less expensive than the less common versions. In addition, the uniqueness of the piece and its condition also play a part in determining its value.

There are many different uses for this type of collectible and they vary according to the customer preference and the price point. Some collectors simply hang their memorabilia on their walls in their homes or garages. However, others find more creative uses for their finds. Less valuable pieces that may have a bit of rust, worn paint or other damage are often turned into clocks or tables tops, or they are simply placed out in the garden as a colorful accent piece.

As is often the case with collectibles, the types of collectors looking for garage themed pieces vary as much as the collectibles themselves. It seems mechanics, car collectors and retro fans are most likely to seek automotive collectibles for their homes. However, their bright colors and unique shapes often draw collectors that otherwise wouldn't be interested in automobiles.

When it comes to locating a vintage garage sign for sale, buyers have several options. Anyone looking for a lower end sign at a lower price would probably have better luck searching flea markets or garage sales. For those with a higher budget who may be searching for that special piece, the internet or an antique dealer may have more to offer.

Vintage garage signs are one of the more popular categories within the automotive collectible industry. They are sought out by both the avid collector with a higher budget and the novice collector with limited spending power. This is most likely because of their broad availability in both large and small formats at both high and low price points.
