Reasons Why Team Building Fails

By Carla Rossouw

Have you ever wondered why your efforts of planning team building activities never work out the way you wanted them to be? You may be doing something wrong. Here are some of the reasons why they do not work.

Some people stab others on their backs. Saying bad things to someone when he does not know it and saying good things to him when he is in front of you is of the most dishonorable things that you can do as a person. On the other hand, this backstabbing issue is very common in teams. If you cannot solve it, team building will always fail as the members will have distrust.

Some people do not respect others. One way of showing your respect is to wait for a person to finish talking before you claim your turn. However, in some meetings, some people do interrupt. If this happens a lot in team building activities, some people will never be able to speak their minds. Therefore, you need to teach the members to respect each other by listening.

Some people love to whine. They love to say their opinions even to the slightest issue. This can be annoying and can give out a negative aura to your team especially when you are doing a team building activity. If you cannot stop someone from whining too much, you should balance the atmosphere by cracking some jokes or telling humorous stories relevant to the situation.

Many people are extremely reserved. Being reserved may also is okay. However, if this involves a group, it's not well appreciated. Team development activities exist to help individuals be open regarding their feelings and ideas. However, you will find many people who're too reserved and also have invisible walls which are too hard to break. This needs time to work to repair. To make your activity successful, you need to encourage everybody to spread out up. This can be done by opening your hearts for them first.

Tardiness is a major issue. Not all employees are industrious and passionate about what they are doing. Some people are tardy probably because they are bored about their work or their life. If a person is tardy, he may refuse to join team building activities therefore the effort will be futile. You need to encourage them to attend. If not, mandate them or require them to do so by giving some incentives. Sometimes, you need to discretely bribe people for their own good.

Your team building event has too many breaks. Time is very important. You need to make use of it wisely. If your event has too many breaks or free time, it may not succeed because people will end up bored or they may think they are wasting too much time.

Team building Gauteng can become a really huge success if you know which things and issues you need to attend to before everything starts.
