What To Know About Antique Trunks

By Estela Bolton

There are many things you should know before buying antique trunks. You want to look for a good price but you also want to make sure that you're finding something that has some real value. While every antique trunk is a collector's item, there are some that are sought after more than others. Finding one from a specific era or a specific designer could be a viable find.

It is easy for modern manufactures to make new furniture look old. Therefore you should always make sure you are buying a real collectible when shopping. All it takes is a little wood stain to make new furniture look old. If something happens to look old, it doesn't mean you should just buy it. You want to make sure that you are paying for what you really want. And that is a collectible trunk

Some of the most popular crates are travel boxes from the eighteenth century. These were used on ships that brought immigrants from Europe to the United States. These types of boxes are long, but they're very narrow. They were designed to fit under the beds on the steamships. These boxes were usually owned by the shipping companies instead of the passengers themselves.

During the American West, stagecoaches used to carry gold from location to location. These stagecoaches carried boxes that were designed for rugged terrain and were built to last for quite a while. These boxes had gold designs and were coded in silver. These are the types of boxes that you see in western movies. They were made of oak and are really popular.

European women used to carry hatboxes from the early 19 century. These boxes are a little bit bigger then met shoe boxes but have just enough caring space to hold one hat. Each box was designed for the specific desires of the woman that owns the box. Some are covered in gold and other precious gems. Some of the gold designs are plain looking and others are very fancy and embroidered.

Trunk makers used to sign their work for special designs and patterns. They did this much in the same way that modern artists signed their artwork. Some of these designs are simply initials and others are more elaborate carvings. Finding a crate that has been signed by a famous designer can be a valuable find. They're experts that specialize in verifying the authenticity of these signatures.

When shopping for antiques, make sure you are buying from a reputable dealer. It is easy to fake antiques. Just because something looks old does not mean that it is old. Just because something looks valuable does not mean that it is valuable. During the nineteenth century, many furniture manufacturers made replicas of famous trunks. You want to make sure that you're buying an original and not a replica.

When you have the right information, buying antique trunks is not difficult. Ensure you are not buying a fake but are instead of buying the real thing. If you happen to find one that is signed by famous maker, it is a good suggestion to get the signature validated by professional. Looking old does not mean that it actually is old and valuable. Crates from specific time are more desired then other time periods.
