Brief Info About Swiss Military Watches

By Fausto Capello

International Watch Company is the world's number one producer of Swiss Army watches. It was set up by Florentino Ariosoto Jones in 1868 who wanted to amalgamate craftsmanship of Swiss products and the breakthroughs of engineering thus producing the Swiss Army watch.

Jones put up the company in Schaffhausen, a town in Switzerland, which was so backwards during the Industrial Revolution. Swiss people were not sure about Jones' abilities. They were thinking that the product will not provide good results and they would end up losing a living.

Johann Heinrich Moser chose the city for the location of his first hydroelectric plant. Jones and Moser eventually met up and, together, established the first Swiss Army watch plant in the town.

With the hydroelectric power plant, electricity was established to the picture hence, improving Swiss Army watches' quality by year 1888. After the First World War, International Watch Company finally gave their workers proper compensation benefits, including health insurance, pension, and housing plans for them and their families.

Having invested on quartz movement, International Watch Company is the leading name of quality Swiss Army watches. They were also the first to produce Swiss Army watches that are electronic battery operated.

The company fell on hard times in the mid 1970's when gold prices soared. The result was that it was no longer beneficial to ship high quality Swiss Army watches to the US and the rest of the world. Japan began to export poor-quality quartz clocks which were sad knock offs of the original Swiss Army watches.

As a reaction, the watch company contracted the best designers and engineers which provided top quality, stylish timepieces as well as jewellery watches made by Porsche and others. Through this, the glory of Swiss Army watches was regained and even heightened the demands of customers.

International Watch Company records the details of every single watch they manufactured since 1880. As a result, owners of Swiss Army watches can bring their pieces to the company to get it checked as well as repaired.

Today, the company's Swiss Army watches vary in price from the low $100's to the high $1000 (U.S. Dollars). Every year the company auctions off Swiss Army watches to benefit a school in Mali.
