Finding Authentic Vintage Signs For Sale

By Gloria Mason

People who want to find vintage signs for sale will need to know what to look for. The interest in these collectibles has increased so much that you will likely find several imitations. If you are looking for the authentic antique, there are a number of things you need to know to correctly identify them. When you know what to look for you can avoid purchasing replicas.

The increased interest is directed toward the porcelain on steel and old steel signs. These signs were typically ordered by breweries, cigarette, automotive, and oil companies. Because this type of signage stopped being used around the time of World War II, authentic products are very rare. For this reason it is important to be careful in your search for these collectibles.

If you are looking for porcelain signage, be aware the characteristics to observe. It is not typical to find these collectibles without rust or chips. These signs were placed outside the establishment usually along dirt roads and would be damaged from the elements or stones kicked up from the road. The rust and chips are indications of authenticity. However, keep in mind that these too can be replicated so a thorough assessment is necessary.

People who are experienced in collecting these items will also consider the type of materials that were available when the signage was created. Make sure you take the time to examine the sign so you can determine if it was actually manufactured when the seller suggests. Most items will be easy to verify by researching the date stamped on the particular item.

If you use the internet to search for collectibles you may find the same item listed on different web pages. If you are finding a large number of identical items it is a good indication that they are not authentic. A rare collection does not have many of the same or similar signage available. A large number of the same item indicates that it has been reproduced.

Keep in mind that this signage hung outside buildings which means they will be weathered. Authentic items are rusted, chipped, and worn. They may also have some fading, be scratched, and be pitted. Remember that some people use acids to create the look of rust and wear.

Authentic signage has natural indications of aging. There will be an uneven fade pattern caused by the different paint and color used. Look for the slight variations in the items. Remember that no two signs will be the same. Check the letter placement on the item and indications of wear from aging. Additionally, the signage will be uniform in size.

When searching for vintage signs for sale, take your time in assessing their authenticity. Look for indications that the items are true antiques. Remember that weathering can be created using acids so pay close attention to the chipping, rust, and fading of the piece you are examining. Do some research using the date imprinted on the sign. Make sure you protect yourself from purchasing counterfeit items.
