What Is A Busboy?

By George Dodson

Dining out can be an enjoyable experience. You can decide where to go and what you want to eat. On entering, your presence is graciously acknowledged by those at the restaurant?s reception. You can ask for a glass of water or a napkin or two; they stand by waiting for your request. After having your meal, you gather your items, put aside a tip and ride home. Your journey is almost over. One person?s journey, however, is only just commencing. By ?someone?, I am referring to the busboy who makes the booth pleasant for the next customer after the previous customer leaves.

Eateries usually have busboys to attend to look after the preparation of each table before and after a customer uses it.

Busboys are not usual in America. Some offer to serve customers snacks and beverages even before the customer takes the initiative to do so. They may help serve the food if the restaurant is short-staffed or even otherwise.

Bussers usually are not paid very well. They are heavily reliant on tips as their hourly or weekly month is very poor.

Many who are employed in smaller, less renowned restaurants carry bus boxes with crockery and utensils piled one on top of the other to carry back to the washer with considerable ease. In upscale restaurants, dishes are carried one by one. This is a painstaking process that is comparatively time-consuming but which helps maintain the image portrayed by these finer restaurants.

A number of celebrities have worked as busboys when they were young to make money.

In his youth, Al Pacino worked as one.

Alec Baldwin, one of the renowned Baldwin brothers (all of whom are involved in the media), was a busboy at New York?s Studio 54 in his youth.

Vietnamese president Ho Chi Minh was also a busboy in Parker House Hotel in Boston.

Jon Stewart was a ?busser? at a Mexican eatery.

Johnny Depp, well known for his role as ?Captain Jack Sparrow? in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, was a busboy prior to his acting career.

The next time you are out at your favorite restaurant, perhaps you ought to keep in mind that if the place looks scintillating, it is for the reason that the busboys that toil to maintain it. They deserve a little extra in tips; something you ought to consider as it is how they make their living. After all, you never know; maybe, just maybe, one of them will become famous and remember you for your token of gratitude.
