These miniature, darling flowering shrubs produce an abundance of attractive, brightly colored flower clusters all through the summer. They usually reach up to three feet, and are suitable even for some smaller gardens. Also known as Lagerstroemia Indica, this plant can reach maybe thirty feet in height. Minis are usually under three feet, and look more like shrubs, often with weeping characteristics. The bark can also look very attractive, smooth and interestingly colored, and leaves may have quite appealing nuances in fall.

Myrtles need to be placed on full sun. Placed in shade, they won't bloom so intensively, and their blooming might be delayed. Larger varieties are sensitive to cold, and they cannot survive very low temperatures. Minis have better cold resistance, and can be planted in more climate zones. Even so, if you live in colder area, it is advisable to bring your plants inside during winter, or at least to protect them.

Wonderful trunk characteristics make them interesting out season as well, but this depends on the particular variety you choose. Bright summer colors really live up a garden, and this makes them very popular among landscape designers. They should find their place in every garden as well.

If air circulation is poor, your plant might experience some problems with powdery mildew. Other problems might include aphids, scale, white flies or sooty mold. Most problems can be avoided if you select the plant according to your climate conditions. Although these plants enjoy full sun, they won't tolerate too extensive heat, and it might result in premature leaf loss.

Pruning should take place in late winter. They tolerate extensive pruning, and you can shape them any way you like, according to their landscape use. Minis often have weeping qualities, and that makes them more than suitable for decorating your patios or terraces. Some varieties won't look very appealing during winter, but others have very nice barks, and look just great even without flowers.

One of the most popular minis is certainly Delta Blush. It has particularly decorative, light pink flowers, and it is usually used as a showcase plant in a garden. It is one of the more weeping varieties, together with Weeping Alamo Fire. This variety has incredible, intensive red clusters of decorative flowers, and it blooms in the mid-summer.

Pocomoke blooms late in the summer and has lovely pink flowers. Thanks to its broad, full habit, this plant can be used as a garden plant. Even so, it is often used as a potted one. Chickasaw is even smaller, also with very attractive pink flowers. It will grow between one and two feet, and its tight growth habit makes it very interesting for every gardener. This variety is more resistant to cold weather as well.
