This has been a dismal, dank winter, we can all agree. We cling to the one hope: Spring is around the corner and with it, pure happiness! As a nation, we are easily pleased: a little sunshine and we forget the long, chill days of darkness, full of aches, moans, sodden washing and exorbitant gas bills.
Apart from Christmas, I have yet to meet many who love winter. Months of gloom and chill; months of longing for Spring: when it will be warmer, when we will feel happier, when we will get out more, eat less, exercise with purpose... as if 120 days can totally transform us and bring with them immediate gratification!
Yup, let us face facts: many of us are prone to 'tomorrow' lives; lives where great things gleam at us from a vague, hazy horizon. Seemingly, it is only once we have earned, found, bought, achieved, gained, succeeded that those glistening rays of hope will beam warmly upon us, bestowing true self-worth and fulfilment.
DIY stores suddenly fill with those who wish to redecorate, revamp, transform as if it is acceptable to live dull, dusty lives throughout Autumn and Winter. As if we must honour Spring by cleaning and nestingas if a lick of duck shell blue paint makes for a life restored once more to gladness and success.
Spring should be our time to turn our backs on the tormentor within. No more waiting for the future to make our dreams a reality, for improvements, for that picture-perfect life which only exists in fairy tales. The secret is to live in the NOW, to allow ourselves to see the special in each and every day, to learn (for learn this we must) how to enjoy the simple things life offers us. And, yes, that includes winter.
Let us embrace this season and every other season with determination to live in the moment. Let us stop looking to the future for the realisation of our goals. Let us live in the present which can be beautiful, inspirational, glorious if only we will let it. Motivating ourselves to value the blessings bestowed upon every day will help us to grow into grateful, cheerful, positive people who find full joy in the simplest of things. And you don't have to wait for a season to spring into action.
If you're looking to celebrate Spring with style then you really should head to private members club, Home House. With longer, lighter (and warmer) days ahead, there are oodles of events this month, including the Members' Spring Party 'Once Upon a Time'!
