Old Metal Signs Are Unique Collectible

By Kathryn Neal

It is no secret that as time progresses things start to fade away. Everything on this planet only has a finite amount of time to be here. This is precisely why people go to such great lengths to preserve a variety of different things to help them and others remember the times that have gone by. One such thing is restoring old metal signs.

It may seem a bit strange to some but the old metal signs of the past all tell a great story of their history and the history of those connected to them. Take for instance the ones used in the 60's and 70's on gas stations and service stations. There is a very large market of collectors who pay hundreds for such signs.

To many of them they have a decision to make once they find one of these old metal signs. They need to decide if they want to restore it back to its former condition or not. It may depend also on why they are in it, on why they are looking for these in the first place. Some people truly do it for the thrill and because they love the items they search for. Some do it strictly for the payday.

Once they were no longer needed, people tossed them aside. They were tossed in peoples barns, in their back yards, and in their basements. People no longer needed them but for some reason they did not see fit to destroy them. For some reason many of them were saved. Maybe not in the best condition, but they were saved none the less.

After years have gone by people started finding that the old signs held a value in nostalgia. People wanted to remember the times when they were used to advertise various things. Oil changes, oil brands and gas brands. Even auto brands were stamped into the metal that made the various signage. These were used for almost anything. Even grocery stores used them but it was the auto industry that retained the value for such collectibles.

Today people called pickers go out to rural counties all over the country searching for these and various other items that hold the same sort of value. There are two types of these that people want. There are those who restore them back to their initial glory and there are those who prefer to leave them old and rusty. They believe that to restore them is to take away from their value.

Either way they were there, then gone, and now found again. Many of the people who found them tried to keep them in their original condition. However a growing number of these collectors decided to try and restore them back to original condition. They knew that if they tried and failed it would ruin their value but they did not care.

They wanted the opportunity to look upon the old metal signs once again in all their former glory. They wanted to look at them and remember whatever it was they remembered from their childhood. Regardless of what they were worth, they were worth much more to the collector. They were priceless because of what they helped them to bring out from their memory.
