How To Care For Brass Jewelry

By Rhea Solomon

Although brass isn't very popular in terms of choosing metal for jewelry, it used to be very popular back in the day. This is mostly because, after being polished, it looks like gold but isn't as expensive overall. Because of this, it is likely that brass jewelry has already been passed down to you by your grandmothers.

If you have a few pieces of this in your collection right now, then you might be troubled by tarnishing at the moment. Although this can look quite nice in moderation, too much of it can make your pieces look really bad. If you are suffering from extreme tarnishing at the moment, then just follow these tips for easy restoration.

If your jewelry is very tarnished, you might want to clean it with a special brass cleaner. Just make sure that you read and follow all of the instructions that the manufacturer provided to a tee. Beware of using cleaners on any stones, as well, since gems tend to absorb them and lose their sparkle because of them in the end.

If you aren't fond of the idea of cleaning your pieces with harmful chemicals, there are various natural cleaners out there that you can look into to get the same effect, as well. You can try scrubbing any tarnish off with tomato juice, for example, or soak the entire piece into some lemon juice or a solution of water and salt. As with the other cleaners, though, these shouldn't be used on gems of any kind.

Hot water and mild detergent would come in handy in this department, too. With a soft cloth, scrub your pieces with mild detergent until it turns into a proper lather and then rinse it off in hot water. Believe it or not, this can actually get rid of a ton of unwanted dirt and grime on your special pieces.

Once your jewelry looks great yet again, though, you have to make it a point to keep it that way. This means protecting it in every way possible, so that it doesn't get tarnished again. When it comes to this, your best bet would be to turn to ziplock pouches for storage. This will prevent air from getting to them. So, basically, anytime you aren't wearing your brass pieces, make sure you place them in airtight pouches.

It goes without saying that brass definitely isn't a very popular metal amongst women and men in today's day and age. However, there are quite a few chances that you have a few of these pieces in your collection right now. This may be because they have been handed down to you by former generations in your family.

Regardless of why you have brass jewelry in your midst, it would be important to protect them, so that they always look great. This means that you will need to clean them regularly and get rid of tarnish whenever it shows up. Also, keep them in proper storage to keep them as nice-looking as possible for as long as possible at the same time.
