Which Layout Type Is Right For Your Garden Space?

By Jennifer Lewis

If you're someone who enjoys gardening or you just want to create a beautiful outdoor area where you can relax, creating a perfect garden space is a totally achievable goal. There are many layouts that you could use depending on your personal preferences and space you are working with. A landscaper will draw out plans before starting to plant and you can do the same to create a garden space that is both beautiful and practical.

The first consideration is the actual terrain and the shape and geographical factors involved. Any plants and other additions should compliment these aspects and should be based on the overall design that will be used. You can create large areas of flat beds or choose to add dimensions by using some planting boxes and visually mixing it up.

There are a lot of factors that can affect how successful your garden will be such as soil, climate, and the amount of sunlight or shade. It's important to consider all of these factors when you are sketching out your plans. Think about the best spot for each of the plants whether they are shrubs, flowers, treats, or vegetables. You want a garden that will be both aesthetically pleasing and easy to maintain.

There are some standard layouts that professional landscapers will use - radial, curvilinear, rectilinear, arc and tangent, and irregular. The names refer to the geometric shapes and how the garden is laid out. The finished effect should appear natural in it's consistency and harmony. When viewed as a whole, the garden should appear ordered and plants and decorative pieces should be laid out in a pleasing manner.

Whichever layout you decide to go with, you have endless options. You could create raised flower beds full of fragrant and colorful flowers or a veggie and herb garden where you can grab fresh items for your dinner every evening. Decide what your goals are and then start doing research to decide how to lay out your garden.
